Wastewater Odor Control

At Hydrite, we provide a comprehensive range of odor management solutions designed to address the unique needs of your wastewater system. We begin by identifying the root cause of your H2S or odor issues, then offer tailored chemical treatments and feed options to achieve optimal results. Whether dealing with air, wastewater, or sludge odors, our advanced neutralizers and countervailants effectively minimize or eliminate odors.

Hydrite solutions include H2S control, advanced oxidation technology, hydrogen peroxide, sulfide precipitation, peracetic acid, and general odor control. Backed by an extensive product portfolio and decades of water treatment service and expertise, wastewater facilities trust Hydrite to provide reliable and effective odor management.

forms of wastewater Odor

Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)

This is produced under anaerobic conditions by sulfate-reducing bacteria and is characterized by a "rotten egg" smell. It is common in stagnant areas or poorly aerated sections of the treatment plant.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

These include compounds like ammonia, mercaptans, and amines, which are released during the breakdown of organic matter and can produce odors ranging from fishy to sharp and pungent.

Ammonia (NH3)

Ammonia results from the decomposition of nitrogen-containing compounds and has a sharp, pungent smell, often found in influent streams with high nitrogen content.

Fat, Oil, and Grease (FOG) Accumulation

Accumulation of FOG can create anaerobic zones where bacteria produce odorous compounds, leading to smells that are rancid or sour.

Anaerobic Digestion Byproducts

These include methane, volatile fatty acids, and other sulfur-based compounds, which are often found in sludge treatment or poorly ventilated areas.

Overloading of Organic Waste

When high levels of organic matter overwhelm treatment systems, it can lead to incomplete degradation and the release of odors.

Improper Aeration

Insufficient oxygen supply can lead to anaerobic conditions and the production of odorous compounds, which is common in lagoons or aeration basins with inadequate mixing.

Chemical Imbalances

Shifts in pH or other chemical changes can affect microbial activity and increase odor production, such as low pH enhancing the release of hydrogen sulfide.

Industrial Wastewater Contributions

Certain industries, such as food processing or chemical manufacturing, may discharge odorous compounds directly into the treatment system.

Sludge Handling and Storage

Decomposing sludge or biosolids can release odorous compounds if not properly managed during drying, storage, or thickening processes.

Environmental Factors

High temperatures can increase biological activity and volatilization rates, while stagnant air or low wind can cause odors to linger.

Solutions and products

Peracetic Acid (PAA)

Hydrite’s Peracetic Acid (PAA) products are highly effective for odor control, particularly in eliminating nuisance odors and harmful hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in wastewater treatment applications. PAA’s strong oxidative properties allow it to rapidly neutralize odors by breaking down harmful compounds like H2S, providing a more effective solution than traditional treatments such as bleach and peroxide. The PAA works by oxidizing the hydrogen sulfide, transforming it into non-toxic byproducts like acetic acid (vinegar) and water. This makes it an environmentally friendly option with minimal residuals, meeting strict regulatory requirements for non-toxic water treatment. Hydrite’s PAA products are ideal for use in a variety of applications, including wastewater systems, oil and gas processes, and retention ponds, offering a versatile and biodegradable solution to control odor while improving overall system performance.

Hydritreat™ SB2216: Liquid antibiotic free antimicrobial, odor control and vigorous H₂S oxidizer, and powerful CIP additive for protein and oxalated removal.

Hydritreat™ SB1523: May be used as an oxidizing agent in flume water and as an antimicrobial agent.

Hydrivail

Hydrite’s Hydrivail product line offers powerful, targeted solutions for wastewater odor control, effectively neutralizing and eliminating offensive odors at their source. Designed to address the unique challenges of wastewater treatment, Hydrivail products utilize advanced chemistry to combat a broad range of malodors, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), ammonia, and other organic compounds. These odor neutralizers and countervailants work by binding to and neutralizing odorous molecules, rendering them imperceptible to the human nose. Hydrivail’s effectiveness extends to a variety of applications, including wastewater treatment plants, sewer systems, and sludge management, providing reliable, long-lasting odor control without the harmful environmental impact of traditional chemical treatments. Whether you need to address specific odor issues or improve overall air quality, Hydrivail delivers a safe, efficient, and sustainable solution.

Hydrivail 627: A highly concentrated countervailant for use in controlling offensive odors in a variety of applications, including water treatment.

Hydrivail 2000: A highly concentrated blend of natural oils used as an odor neutralizer/counteractant.
